I stopped watching Torchwood Season 2 sometime last year, but I've taken it up again.

I'm up to episode 8, the third in the death-of-Owen arc. I know Owen is a rapist and generally dubious human being, but I like him. Would I want to know him? No. But he's not boring.

I know Owen is a rapist

He is?! How did I miss this?

(Personally, I can't deal with S2.)

In S01E01, he's depicted as using something alien in an atomizer to instantly seduce people. Although we aren't given enough information to know how his targets felt about it afterward, they certainly aren't giving meaningful consent at the time.

I will say that I debated about using the term "technically" to describe the situation, and then decided it was clear-cut enough that, even though his targets are falling over themselves to have sex with him, it really is rape.

Wow, I must have forgotten that. I really didn't like Owen in most of S1 but he began to grow on me after the "lets make Owen cry" ep (the one with the pilot). I did like Owen/Tosh in S2.

I've never gotten the "ZOMG he's clearly a rapist!" claim. He is definitely of dubious moral fibre and what he does there is not cool, but I do think using pheromones to seduce people is skeevy and sleazy and gross but not really that much different from what a lot of people do in order to seduce others.

And yeah, the thing about s2 is that it makes two characters interesting right before they die. And that irritates the fuck out of me. It kind of happens in Children of Earth too. On Torchwood, apparently no one can be arsed to write interesting, nuanced character backstories and motivations until right before they're about to be offed. *shakes fist at Torchwood*

*also shakes fist at the writers*

(Even though I chose not to watch CoE. ;-) )

I equate the pheromones to GHB, so yeah, it's definitely non-con. However, I am with you -- I enjoyed Owen. He wasn't likable, but he was an exceedingly interesting and compelling character.

I'd only ever seen Burn Gorman in a bit of Bleak House, I think. They had a real find in him.

It is a weak show in a lot of ways. I feel like it's never quite gelled. And, much as I love John Barrowman, he really isn't strong enough of an actor to support being the focal point of the show. It's like he's a green-screen effect they're all playing against: even when he's standing silently, he doesn't quite convince.

I have no idea how they're going to do a Season Four with so few characters left.
