Before I took the sleeping pill, I thought up a John and Penny erotic scene, but I don't know what to do with it. It doesn't fit in my current story.
My neighbors play a lot of video games late into the night. I had my windows open, and I think they had theirs, because the rumbles, explosions, and screams seemed to be coming in Sensurround. (It did interesting things for those semi-dreams you have when you're not quite asleep.) I also heard an intermittently profane, fairly world-weary argument between two men who seemed to be standing on the other side of my blinds, but that was either my neighbor on his balcony or somebody else's competing movie. I'm not sure it was even in English.
Somebody was definitely out in the night screaming "Fuck!" a lot at one point, but what with the sound distortion I don't know if they were down in the courtyard or on the other side of the wall getting killed by video monsters.
My smoke detector was politely reminding me my battery was low every few minutes -- I think that's what finally woke me in the morning -- so I called Maintenance and then took it down so it wouldn't drive me mad. Now it's beeping.

You might use that stray scene you thought of for a post Heritage ficlet or an "outtake."
See, there's the problem. Don't I need to finish the main story before I can post a post-story ficlet?
But I've learned never to argue with the muse. I write things out of order a lot. Just the process of writing the unrelated scene could help you with the main story.
Considering that none of it was really happening -- no (real) guns, no casualties, no police being called -- it was very eventful!
