Update

The cat is cooperating again. Even though it doesn't make medical sense, I think the appetite stimulant he's getting (Cyproheptadine) makes him restless, unhappy, and uncomfortable if he gets it too often.

I did read something last night that said, just in passing, that possible side effects included the inability to urinate. A few days ago when he was still getting the drug twice a day, I did notice him enter the litter box, leave, get halfway out the door, and then go back to it, and return to it several times after that. I didn't do a before-and-after check, so I don't know now if that's what the trouble was, but that's the only mention I've found of a negative outcome to Cyproheptadine that could produce that much discomfort. (It certainly sounds uncomfortable!) He needs appetite stimulants, I agree, and I was going to try him on one dose a day, but I'm going to talk to my vet instead about whether it's advisable to give it to him at all.

In other news, I have developed an intermittent earache. I'm hoping this does not evolve further.

I'm glad you have narrowed down what could be causing his discomfort. There's bound to be other options.

My earache is better -- don't compensate for me! :)

I hope so. My vet was out today, so I'll try calling her tomorrow to discuss the situation with her.

So far it's intermittent, mostly showing up when I go out in the cold. It didn't happen today, which is probably a good sign.
