Cat update

The Magnifikitten is back in the hospital. When I came home from Chicago TARDIS I found that things were beginning to go wrong. (The cat was wonderfully looked after by my sister, who not only gave him pills and fluids but spent several hours there every day to make sure he was comfortable. She loves him, too.) He was fidgety during fluids and had started giving off loud and mournful wails when he normally would just mew for attention. Plus, he wasn't eating enough, despite getting appetite stimulants twice a day. And he had very unhappy body language. I suspected that, if not in pain, he was in pretty severe discomfort. I called the vet on Monday, but the earliest I could get an appointment even for a blood test was last Thursday. The bloodwork came back today, and his numbers have shot back up. (They're not as bad as they were originally, but they're substantially worse than they were.) So he's back in the hospital for another round of intravenous fluids.

The one good thing was that his RBC is now 26% -- enough over the crisis point that we don't have to give him erythropoietin with all its dangers.

I'm hopeful. It's been almost three months since his first bout of fluids, and three months is a pretty reasonable time between treatments. If he starts needing them every three or four weeks, said the vet, we would have to reconsider. I think by that she means, "give up." But we're not there yet.

It's encouraging news about his RBC -- that indicates that his system is healthy enough to make its own red blood cells, and that's a good thing. I'm sorry he's uncomfortable, but you've got hope and it sounds like a good vet also.
