Hello, Jack! Hi, nice lady!

Dream King? Who he?

I was feeling inarticulate, and thinking of just posting "Jack says hi". Then I remembered the early 90s, when people suddenly discovered Tori Amos and were reading Sandman, and would get all excited on encountering these lyrics:

Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and neil'll be hangin' out with the DREAM KING
Neil says hi by the way

So, feeling a bit quirky, I posted.

As I remember, at the time Gaiman protested that he'd only met Amos once and didn't know why she'd referred to him, but the story you find now is that they were old friends.

Jack says hi, by the way.

Lord, I have that album (and listened to it religiously) but the reference just kept sailing above and beyond.

Hey, baby Jack. xoxoxo

I remember your Mom had a kitten named Jack, an adorable mischief-maker. How is he?

Jack isn't the baby any more. Now there's Phoebe (the eldest, who's 17), Jack, Erin, and Gizmo. Oh! And I forgot--my married sister is temporarily living at home again with her cat Chester. Insane.

That sounds ominous (taking her cat when she left). I hope that works out all right.

To explain my sister--her husband just took a job in Indiana. But she's not done with her degree. So, they're selling their house, she's with my parents until she finishes school, and he has an apartment out of state. It's all very strange.

Did I mention they've only been married a year?

Ah, many fond memories of Tori closing shows with that song.

Yeah, I was one of thems who went lots and lots of Tori Amos shows. Not as many as some. But I traveled a fair bit. Sometimes on planes. I lost count at like 50ish shows maybe. I...might have some lyrics tattooed on me. Maybe.

Re: Neil. I got so excited, back in the day when I cared, when I found the "if Neil makes me a tree" line's origin (in Stardust. I was reading it in a strange apartment in Budapest).

If Tori Amos had come along a little earlier or a little later, I might have been a huge fan, but I was struggling with my first job and getting deeper and deeper into bitterness and Elvis Costello. So I know a bit about her, but not a lot about her work. My friend S. is a fan, though.

I gave up several albums ago. Last tour was the first since the 90s that I didn't go to any shows. But in fairness, I was flat on my back on the couch, as it was when I first threw out my back.

She came around the exact right time for me. Early high school ish. I couldn't go to shows till after high school, though, and by then we're talking around her fourth album. I guess it helped that I was very good friends with a Very BNF (independently of our Tori love) and then I met other BNF's through him. I was on the outskirts of that clique because I didn't travel quite as much as them (they'd do like whole tours). So I sort of made my own clique of second-tier travellers. Like the mostly west-coast on-and-offers. We were cooler and less snotty, and cared more about the shows than Tori's attention, for the most part.

It was some good times. I met lots of people and saw lots of places I'd never have otherwise. But man it was SO like high school sometimes. But more expensive and with less sleep.

You always sound like you've done such interesting, fun things! Aside from living in England for a few years (a long time ago) I feel like all I've done since college is work.

I dunno. I like to travel. And I've put off being an adult for as long as possible. It...has its drawbacks. But it's the instability itself (financial, healthwise) that pushes me to do these things while I still can.

And I'd give anything to live in England for a few years! That's definitely interesting and fun. I've researched all possibilities and have come up nothing. They don't want me.

The thing about getting Spanish citizenship didn't work out? I have been meaning to send you a link to this company, who do genetic testing.

My family has a Polish surname that's common in both Jewish and non-Jewish communities, but our family history begins at Ellis Island in 1910, and my grandfather (who died in 1946) always refused to talk about the past. My dad took one of their tests in the hope of learning a little more.
