A realization

A lot of past relationships (of all kinds) make more sense if you postulate that, long before the term was ever coined, the other party saw me as a Magic Pixie Dream Girl.

I see myself today as very solidly grounded and practical.  But that's a relatively recent development.  I once walked a couple of miles to someone's house, across fields and over stiles, with a teacup in one hand.

(It was in England.  There's something very freeing about being someplace where you will never, ever run into anybody who knew you in high school.)

I have strong hopes of becoming the kind of eccentric aunt that features in so many children's books, giving wonderful gifts and taking kids on special excursions. I would have a house filled with boxes containing mysterious objects and the children would have adventures in my back yard.

Do kids still read that kind of book?

On rare occasions, yes. I had an aunt like that. Everyone should have an aunt like that.
