Keep Calm and Carry On

First, the little red netbook gets wet and the keyboard stops working.

Then, my dauntless 70s-era vacuum cleaner slips the agitator belt on the carpet-cleaning head YET AGAIN, and I reluctantly decide to replace it with a refurbished Dyson.

Then I step into the shower this morning to find ... no hot water. I go to work clean but cold, and conclude this evening that, yep, it's not a fluke, I really have no hot water.

I realize this isn't really three of a kind: I feel no emotional attachment to my hot water heater, just a feeling of dread at what this will cost. But I have a definite sense of being Messed About by the universe.

Plus I think I may be about to get a period.

I have plugged a $5 USB keyboard into the netbook, and am carrying on. My sister has suggested the possibility of genuinely fixing the agitator belt problem. And a plumber is coming out tomorrow morning.

What kind of water heater do you have? Maybe it's simply a matter of your pilot light going out...

It's electric. It might be the circuit breaker, but that's outside my comfort zone.

The manual is fairly emphatic that only trained personnel should attempt to service the water heater. This plumber is an authorized maintenance technician for the water header company.

With luck it'll turn out to be cat hair caught in something and it'll just cost me $100 for the service call.

Turned out to be the thermometer(s?). Relatively cheap. It was almost under warranty, but it turns out the warranty doesn't transfer when ownership does.

Impressed with the plumber.

Yay! And a pity the warranty didn't transfer.
