I am reading Cowardice, Laziness, and Irony:  How Science Fiction Lost the Future, by Jonathan McCalmont, and enjoying it immensely.

This is not because I have any particular yen to see contemporary science fiction get socked in the eye.  It's more because it's such a pleasure to read someone thinking about things.

Hello! I hope this isn't too weird, but I saw we'd both commented on one of paperclipbitch's recent fics, and as I always like making new Whovian friends and your username sounded math/CS-y (I'm an English major turned math grad student) I thought I'd wander over. And then I saw that you also know my friend green_maia, and that you've been posting cool stuff like this article, all of which to say: would you be up for making a new friend? :)

Oh, how nice! I was just thinking yesterday evening, "I need to make some new online friends!"

I know a lot of lovely people on LJ and elsewhere, but as time has gone on, people are drifting in different directions. Life has moved on, fandoms have moved on, technology has moved on. LJ just isn't as social as it once was.

But I have no plans to leave any time soon. Welcome!

Oh, fun! :) And yeah, LJ has been seeming a little quieter lately, but I like it too much to leave, too. :P

PS: I see by your user profile that you're in Illinois, and I saw above that you're a math grad student. Are you at the University of Illinois, by any chance? I ask because my Dad was an assistant math prof there, years and years ago, and that's actually where I was born!

Nope, I'm at Northern Illinois University. But my mom briefly attended UIUC, and then transferred to the U of I at Chicago, which is where she met my dad. :D
