Well, Friday the 13th landed on me

... like a big vat of something unpleasant.

My main PC, which houses all my financial data and all my programming tools, died. I am not worried about the data, because I have it doubly backed-up, but I have no access to any of it right now. The failure was such that I no longer trust my hardware and plan to build a new PC, but this is going to take time and money.

Also, someone hit me from behind while I was waiting to take a turn off an interstate exit ramp. This was while I was on my way home yesterday. No injuries, we both have insurance, and the other driver took full responsibility, but I need a new bumper, which is a NUISANCE.

Finally, I just got a whiff of something biological and catty. Jack has just done something very unpleasant in my study.

Ugh. Definitely worse than my stupidity from yesterday. I was out with friends last night and went to call Bill to let him know I was on my way home. It rang and rang, so I double checked the number to see why nobody answered and realized I had called my MOTHER instead! I quickly hung up so as not to wake them, and re-tried Bill. But my mom called me back, all worried, and of course, this would be the one call out of 30 where my phone does its stupid echo feedback loop thing where I hear myself echoed in the phone while I'm trying to talk, which confuses me, and confuses my mother, and I'm sure she's wondering if I'm drunk dialing her at this point. Egads. Yeah, that's nothing compared to your day. Speedy recovery to your computer and car, and BAD JACK, NO NOMS FOR YOU.

You know, I actually felt better when I realized, "I've got a bad luck streak! No wonder I feel like crap!" I've been stressing over my job assignment, over whether I can make it there at 8 am every day, and so on, and getting increasingly depressed. It actually helped to realize, "And I've had a run of bad luck! This isn't typical!"

How old is your PC? Can it be fixed with parts, at least for the short term?

I bought it on January 1, 2006. It's possible the failure is due to something other than the motherboard, but I don't know. It kept raising stop errors as I tried to boot, tried to recover, tried to format and reinstall the OS, etc.

I suppose I could try removing some of the memory (there was a reference to memory in one of the stop errors) and see if that fixes it, but increasingly over the last year or so, things have ceased working. Some of the USB ports won't work, some of the slots won't work when a card is plugged in, etc.

I guess I could take it in to the shop at Microcenter and see if they can salvage it, but I do want a better machine for programming. I was planning to buy one in Q3 or Q4, I just planned on still having a functional machine to use while I built it!

I usually buy my parts from newegg.com.

What languages do you program?

C# and (reluctantly) VB. I also program for SQL Server. I know other languages and databases, but that's what I mostly get paid to do.

That's an interesting icon!
