Over to you, Internet

A close friend of mine, who is depressed, poor, hates his job, etc., wants to start using my washing machine and dryer.

He has other options: there are coin machines in his building (which he won't use because he doesn't trust his neighbors not to abuse his clothes if they want to use the machines. To the best of my knowledge he has never tested this theory.) There are also laundromats near his home.

I don't want to let him use my machines because his apartment has vermin. What kind, I don't know. He hasn't specified and I haven't asked. I'm fine with that.

While he is clean in his person and usually wears clean clothes, I'm afraid of hitchhikers in his laundry bag or basket. So I've said no. I offered to give him money for the laundromat if that was a problem but he said no.

Now I feel guilty. But I don't feel unreasonable.

You are being completely reasonable. But in answer to your second question, I wish there was a box for "discuss it further and find out exactly what kind of vermin he meant."

Out of curiosity? Or does it make a difference?

I can't think of any life form that could be causing him trouble that I would welcome into my home. Not even the neighborhood feral cats.

Well, mainly curiosity. I am nosy! But also because I wouldn't let bedbugs within a mile of me or anything I own, nor cockroaches, nor fleas. But ants would be less worrying for instance. Although actually I would be pretty reluctant to share my washing machine just because I have tender feelings about my washing machine. Wait, that came out wrong ...

I'm quite fond of my machines. They've served me well.

No. For God's sake, he can just man up and go to the laundry room with a magazine the way the rest of us do. I used public machines for years without any issue. He needs to put on his big boy panties and deal with it.

I love having my own washer and dryer and NOT sharing.

He will live.

Also, he will hang out in your place and get underfoot while he is doing the wash, which will REALLY BE A PAIN IN THE ASS.

LOL! Thank you! Thank you for putting it in plain English! You've put the situation into proper perspective for me!

That's a lot to ask of a person. The time, the electricity, the general weirdness of doing your personal chores at someone else's house. It sort of seems like overstepping boundaries on his part to even suggest it. His building has a laundry room, for heaven's sake! He can use it like everybody else does, and keep an eye on his stuff if he's worried.

Yeah, you are right and mustangsally78 is right. When did it become my job to shield him from life's unpleasantnesses?
