Drinking meta in the afternoon

Is it wise for an author to read meta? I've been reading a lot on LJ in the last hour or so. (sensiblecat, elisi, malsperanza)

Rich, juicy, wine-dark meta. But I've been mentally meta-ing "Heritage" now, seeing even more than I thought I saw.

This has a slightly forbidden feel, like drinking wine in the morning. Or drinking cider that has begun to ferment.

I think it's dangerously circular. I think perhaps I should only read the Really Good Stuff when I've finished that story.

That icon is perfect for this post, hee.

I think it depends on whether the meta makes you want write more or curl up in angst and not ever consider writing. Sometimes analyzing the subtext can be good in getting you over writer's block. Other times...

Reading meta makes me feel almost drunk, sometimes. But I'm afraid it could paralyze me, make me too self-conscious. I'm trying to ease into doing some proper writing again.

Then definitely no metaing. Write without thinking now (if that makes sense ;) ) analyze plot later.

I was thinking about Heritage a couple of days ago. Do you think you'll ever take it up again? I hope so. It was subtle and well-observed, two characteristics not always seen together in fanfic.

I put it down, but never put it away, so to speak. P & J are on my mind a good chunk of the time.

I'm hoping to ease into it after this story I'm writing (about a different Who character) ends.

Thank you very much. You were (and indeed still are) one of the people whose good opinion about my work I most prized and whose comments I most looked forward to.
