The Palm is dead. Long live the iPod!

I ordered a 32 gig 4G iPod Touch today - my first iPod. This will be a replacement for the Palm Z22 that fatally malfunctioned sometime between Saturday and Tuesday. Sigh.

Palm no longer makes stand-along PDAs. You can get them used, but they die. I'd only had this last one for about six months. All my favorite, most necessary apps also have iPhone versions, but I was reluctant to move up to an iPhone (or for that matter a Palm-branded phone), because right now I pay less than $10 a month for cell phone service. I just don't use the phone that much. The cheapest iPhone plan would have cost me over $650 more per year!

(I could have moved to Android, but some of the apps I use really are unique, like LifeBalance. Plus, I have a ton of data in various proprietary formats that I'd either have lost or would have had to figure out how to port.)

So, luckily I found out about the iPod Touch. Cheaper, does a lot of stuff, and runs the same apps as the iPhone, as long as phoning is not involved. Which it isn't in my case.

I'm sorry the Palm died, but I'm really looking forward to the iPod.

Hmmm. Now you've given me ideas. There are a lot of recs for apps that are supposed to be good for special needs kids on iphone and the like. But I use pay-as-you and I've had times where I've put $40 on the phone and got notified that I needed to add more time to keep the minutes alive(which happens after a year). So, yeah, I have no need or desire for a monthly phone bill.

Oh, I don't know -- I've been typo'ing up a storm, and even substituting homonyms and near-homonyms, and I'm not sick. Maybe it's lack of sleep? I'm sure it's related in my case!

Ditto re pay-as-you-go. I was willing to upgrade to Android and pay $25 a month for service (from Virgin Mobile), but only one of the apps I rely on ran on Android. There are similar apps in some cases, but as I said above, at least one of them is unique.

The iPod Touch solved my problem: as my friend M. put it, it's basically a PDA with a camera and iPod capabilities added. And no subscriptions necessary, yay!
