Doing housekeeping. As I've said before, I sometimes almost enjoy this, as long as there's plenty of time to do it. I get over my procrastination by setting a timer for 15 minutes. When the fifteen minutes is up, I stop. Later today there will be more 15 minute intervals.

I used to have a horrible time getting myself to do anything housekeeping-ish, because it seemed so futile. There was always so much organizing to be done, so many decisions to be made, so much stooping and shelving and throwing away. And it seemed as if all I had to do was turn my head and somehow there was a carpet of books, papers, magazines, and dirty mugs with dessicated teabags all over everything.

Somehow I got the place into reasonable order despite this, and then hired a cleaning person. She comes in every two-four weeks to give the place a good scrub. And, though this may not make sense, the phrase that always comes to mind is, "she keeps me honest". If I don't keep the place in reasonable order, she can't clean, and I get embarrassed.

It's an indulgence, but I'd rather spend money on a clean, sweet-smelling apartment than on many, many other things.

I do the SAME, EXACT THING, all the way around. I set timers when I want to clean the house, so that it doesn't feel like the cleaning takes over the whole day (I have to say, my mother did this with us with chores when we were kids, and I think it makes her a genius). And I also have a cleaning lady who comes every other week, and before she comes I do a massive tidying-up so that she doesn't think I live in filth. It's so true, she keeps me terribly honest.

The cleaning lady is the best thing I've ever done and not nearly as expensive as I think people think it is. If I can help it, I plan to keep it as a reasonable indulgence for the rest of my life.

I TOTALLY AGREE.
