Lent, Day 18

Today was a really good day.

It started off badly, with me ducking out of a seminar I'd already paid a fee for. An excuse arrived an hour later with a recurrence of stomach bug symptoms. But I bought an OTC medication the doctor last Monday recommended, and the symptoms stopped.

It was a good day because I got quite a lot done. I read a chapter of The Artist's Way, did the exercises, was inspired; I basted the zipper into a pair of pants I'd been meaning to mend for literally months (I'd already removed the broken zipper from them); I did a few rows on the sweater I've been making for two years; and I took 2 boxes of books (also sitting around for six months) to Half Price Books.

I also went to Office Depot. The original reason was to buy a box of plain envelopes and some hanging-folder tabs, but I also bought a nice plastic file box to serve as a paper-recycling receptacle, a lovely rust-orange portfolio to hold images of my ideal life (an idea from TAW) and a very cheap ($13.99) fountain pen.

A word about the fountain pen. I used to have a cheap-ish (~$30) fountain pen that I loved. I used it for writing in my journal. I even dedicated a little wooden box to holding its refill cartridges. It didn't have sentimental value, except for being a present I'd bought for myself, and loved.

And then I lost it. In winter, outside a Perkins Family Restaurant in Montgomery, Ohio. I searched the parking lot and snow drifts, and couldn't find it.

That was about 13 years ago. And I haven't had a fountain pen since.

And now I have this one. As a fountain pen, it's probably not of the highest quality, since it cost less than half as much as the one I bought 14-15 years ago. But it's a fountain pen.

I'm prepared to take care of it. And to love it.

I'm glad you have the pen. A good pen is important. I don't say that with any sarcasm at all.

I agree completely. I have a favorite brand and model of ballpoint, too.
