I can now report that Guardsman Water Ring Remover Cloth (linked to on Amazon but available by order from your local ACE Hardware) and Guardsman Furniture Touch Up Kit are miracle workers. I highly recommend.

The Water Ring Remover Cloth is a cloth, impregnated with what I think is a mild solvent. You rub it on the water ring, with the grain, and by golly, the stain starts to disappear. My stain was still visible, although much reduced, after use, so I touched it up with the Guardsman Furniture Touch Up Kit. Now, unless you catch the light reflecting off it just so, so that the difference in surface texture is visible, you can't even find the place where the ring was. And I wouldn't be surprised if some furniture polish took care of even that.

So I recommend these products highly. My links are to Amazon, but I found the touch-up markers at ACE Hardware, and they were happy to order me the (reusable) Water Ring Remover Cloth. I probably paid less than $11 for both. And I'm very satisfied.

I'm glad. I know you were worried about that ring.

Indeed. I feel a little shallow and materialistic for getting so upset about it -- but that table is truly a beautiful thing, that I love. My Dad found it, refinished it, and gave it to me, so it means a lot, and I was heartbroken that I had allowed it to be damaged.

It's not shallow or materialistic to care about something that someone put their hard work and love into! It's not like this is some Pottery Barn generic thing. Your dad refinished it for you. And frankly, even if it was a Pottery Barn table, who cares? It's yours, and if you can restore it to its original shape, then why not? It's not like you're not feeding your family to do it.
