Birthday presents for fictional characters

chase820 said, "Oh yes: you shouldn't go around trying to buy Christmas presents for your characters. That is insane. However, you should know them well enough that if you ever somehow got the opportunity to buy them one, you'd know exactly what they'd want."

I thought of John's birthday present immediately: I'd get him a kaleidoscope, and make him a homemade cake.

Penny's a little harder to buy for. John could get away with giving her a bit of semiprecious jewelry. Books are good: a slim volume of poetry is an undemanding gift, or the kind of thoughtful treatise on the philosophy of science that you can read a little at a time. A box of really good chocolates would be lingered over and appreciated. She'd also appreciate the cake and thank you effusively.

Incidentally, lots more people use "kaleidoscope" as a metaphoric name than actually sell kaleidoscopes. This is interesting.

You know what I'd get Penny if I were John? Je Reviens by Worth. Not expensive, but classic.

It's one of my favourites :)
