NZ Earthquake

A massive earthquake has hit Christchurch, NZ.  The epicenter was only five miles from the center of the city, and it hit at 1 pm on a Tuesday afternoon.  Many buildings have collapsed.  The roads are said to be impassible, due both to surface damage and to water main and sewer breaks.  Fire is a significant worry.

It's just awful. I'm reading, but I can't imagine.

I know. But it seems to be being handled extremely well by the authorities -- none of that "let's just improvise a massive rescue effort!" approach we saw with Katrina.

That's true. The mayor of Christchurch seems to be particularly on top of things, even in the middle of a devastating crisis like this.
