Seriously

How come no reaction posts to S05E08? I'm genuinely curious. Was everybody out enjoying the sunshine? Did everybody just spontaneously decide to give posting a miss this week? Or was some collective tipping point reached and nobody really cares anymore?

Seriously. It's not important in the bigger scheme of things, but I'd really like to know.

There have been some on my flist.

I think part of it is that it was a 2-parter so people are mainly holding off until the second part.

Personally, I thought it was a fun episode, and I love the Rory/Doctor interaction, but I don't have too many thinky thoughts beyond that. I didn't find it to be an episode that invited a lot of deep thinking. There's nothing wrong with that, I like a good action/adventure yarn, but I don't have that much to say about it.

Yes, I like the Rory-Doctor interaction much better than the Amy-anybody interaction. I'm not an Amy-hater, but she just isn't coming across as a real person as much as Rory has been lately. It may be partly that the actor playing Rory is simply better at it, but Rory also gets the opportunity to say more complex things than Amy does.

Amy comes across as someone who shuts her eyes to things she doesn't want to see. Rory comes across as someone who takes life far too seriously to risk doing so.

I don't really hate fictional characters (though I do often love them, which is quite paradoxical) but I don't find Amy to be... approachable? accessible? relatable? Something like that. She's just so freaking weird all the time, to everyone. Which, to me, is sort of the Doctor's job. I'm just set in my ways like that.

Though one thing that does irk me is that the show doesn't seem to acknowledge the extreme degree of Amy's weirdness, which makes me wonder if she's written to be that weird on purpose or they were shooting for "kind of fun and quirky" but waaaay overshot the mark.

I don't find her weird, exactly. I suppose it depends on what you mean by "weird". If she were a real person who I was observing in action, I could make certain assumptions. I would say she came off as someone so inward-focused that she barely noticed other people. I would say she seemed preoccupied with something inside, only occasionally surfacing. But this is because most real people make some kind of sense inside.

She seems quirky without the fun. She actually has more of an older sister than a younger sister vibe: capable of being very nice on occasion, and ultimately does love you, but ruthless as only someone with long experience of you can be if you get in her way.

A further PS: know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see some other female threaten Amy's place with Rory. I'd like to see how she handled that.

I haven't been posting recaps because I am very far behind -- last episode I've seen is Flesh and Stone. I'll get to the others in time, just haven't yet.
