EW asked Jay McInerney, "author of Bright Lights, Big City and Story of my Life" for his take on Salinger's death.

What, no one else would answer the phone?

I guess he had nothing better to do?

"Bright Lights, Big City" is actually one of my favorite books, I confess.

I remember it as being deceptively simple: one of those books that's a lot easier to read than it was to write. Very subtly crafted.

But I would never have thought of McInerney as the best person to sum up Salinger. You want a colleague, or a contemporary, or a student. (I know, with Salinger, these might be hard to find.) I wouldn't have thought of McInerney as the next generation's Salinger, or someone who learned much from Salinger. All I can think of to connect these two is ... they both wrote coming-of-age stories?
