Thanks to the freezing rain for which Ohio isn't well known, but should be, it took an hour to travel the 15 miles home today from work. I saw evidence of at least three accidents on the way.

My sister has found what looks like the absolutely perfect house for me, in an exurb not far from where I live. The price seems quite reasonable for what you get. But "reasonable" doesn't mean "affordable". If I do the numbers ambitiously, I can just about tie all the ends together. If I do them conservatively, I'd need a housemate for at least a decade. It might almost be worth it.

Sounds promising. Good luck to you!

Well, I've come to the reluctant conclusion that it wouldn't be prudent to try to buy it. A pity, but there it is. When you add up all the costs associated with home ownership -- property taxes, homeowner's insurance, maintenance costs, increased utilities, yard care, and snow removal -- plus the difference between my rent and a likely mortgage payment, it's quite simply out of my reach.

I know what you mean though. Property tax is like adding a house payment or two.
