Birthday ficlet for papilio_luna: Her Birthday

Happy belated birthday, p_l!

Title: Her Birthday: a Heritage ficlet
Author: np_complete
Beta: kalleah
Rating: General
Summary: Penny's birthday (Chapter 4), from John's perspective.

It’s her birthday. She’s at her desk right now. Should he give her her present?

Choosing it was a painful process. Nothing too romantic: he might fantasize about her wearing a scarf, a pin, a ring of his gift, but he hasn’t earned that familiarity. Nothing that would cause comment: a vase overflowing with flowers is out. Nothing that would betray how often he thinks about her, how much of her he has committed to memory. And nothing too rare or precious. Above all, he does not want to frighten her off.

His choice was a book on African violets. It’s a neutral subject, one of mutual interest, and it implies nothing but a desire to see her houseplants thrive.

But maybe even this is too much. Only friends and family give each other presents. What is he to her? She looks at him as if she might care for him, she listens to him with flattering attention, she colludes with him to steal away for secret, private meetings. Together they fly under the radar, communicating silently, arranging their appointments under the blind eyes of their gossiping, judgmental colleagues. She sees something in him she likes, he’s sure of that. But does she feel anything like what he is beginning to feel for her?

He’s ready – just about – to take his chances, and find out.

I love the glimpse at John's thoughts. While Penny is an observant person, we still see everything filtered through her experiences and insecurities.

I have an unfinished fic from John's perspective, about the Christmas right before he meets Penny. I'd forgotten that, since you hadn't seen that, you wouldn't have seen anything from John's perspective before!

Thanks so much for reading, and commenting!

Wow, see what happens when I leave the internet for 24 hours? That'll show me!

What a lovely little vignette. Both Penny and John are such subtly but fully realised characters. I just love them both so much. You may insert my usual encouragements to continue their story here. :) And thank you very much for thinking of me!

Yes, indeed! I certainly want to! I keep finding new distractions and reasons not to write on any given day. But you've heard all this before ....

Well, happy birthday, dear! You wrote me such a lovely story for my birthday that I was inspired to try writing one for yours! And it came together very easily! (I was amazed!)
